Welcome to Dickenson County Virginia
Dickenson County was formed in 1880 from parts of Wise, Russell, and Buchanan Counties. The County was named in honor of William J. Dickenson, a State Legislator from Russell County, who patroned the bill in the House of Delegates in 1880 to establish Dickenson as the 100th county in Virginia. And thereafter it became known as Virginia's "baby" county.
Encompassing a land area of 335 square miles, the County lies in the Appalachian Plateau with Pine (Cumberland) Mountain running along its Kentucky border. Elevations in general vary from 1,200 feet above sea level to 3,137 feet on the northwest border. The mountainous surface of the County is characterized by many small streams separated by sharply rising ridges, steep slopes, and narrow valleys. The principal streams are the Russell Fork, Pound, Cranesnest, and McClure Rivers.

Here you will discover breathtaking mountain scenery and endless mist-shrouded ridges, down-home cooking, old country churches, world-class bluegrass musicians, reunions, festivals, and always plenty of friendly, smiling faces.

All seasons in Dickenson offer spectacular mountain scenery. Visitors in May and June will see a several species of native rhododendrons in bloom, as well as many other varieties of wild flowers. Summertime visitors will get to take in the beautiful greens of majestic forests in all their glory. Autumn visitors trek to the mountains during the second and third weeks of October to see the breathtaking colors of the fall foliage. Wintertime visitors get to witness one of natures most spectacular gifts of peace and serenity as snow blankets the rugged mountain landscape transforming it into a soft, gentle place to sit and reflect by a warm fireplace.

Dickenson offers a wide variety of activities for outdoor enthusiasts ranging from white-water rafting on world-class rapids shooting through the Breaks Canyon on the mighty Russell Fork River, to camping, hunting, fishing, biking, horseback riding and hiking on the some of the same trails that Daniel Boone once explored over 200 years ago.
